The Black Church (Romanian: Biserica Neagră) is a Gothic hall church in the Transylvanian city of Brasov in Romania.

It was originally a Catholic church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Black Church has borne its present name since a fire in 1689. Today it is the main church of the German-speaking Honterus congregation of the Evangelical Church A.B. in Romania.

Magura is a village in Brașov County and part of the municipality of Moieciu.

It is located on the eastern side of the Piatra Craiului Mountains, about six kilometres west of Bran Castle.

An hour’s drive from Brasov in the direction of Bucharest is Peles Castle.

It is one of the most beautiful castles in Romania, located in the Prahova Valley and close to the city of Sinaia.

The Gate of St. Catherine dates from 1556 and was built on the foundations of the earlier wooden gate, the Gate of the Holy Spirit, which was erected in 1522. The name of the gate comes from the nunnery that stood there and was named after Saint Catherine.

The upper part of the building has four turrets symbolising the “Ius gladii”, a medieval privilege that gave the rulers of Brasov the right to inflict the ultimate punishment.

Historically, the “Ius gladii” referred to the legal authority to pronounce the death penalty and have it executed outside Rome within the framework of capital jurisdiction.

A small town with about 15.000 Inhabitants, a fortress and a dinosaur park. In the 14th century the fortress was built above the town on the limestone rocks and in 1623 and 1640 it was extended with a well 80 Klafter (a historical German measure of length, 80 Klafter are about 140 metres) deep.

The Rasnov Dinopark is located right next to the fortress. So nothing prevents you from having a wonderful family day out.

If you want to see the whole old town from high above and have a dreamy view in front of your eyes, you should definitely come here.

Everything here seems magical and surreal and makes you wish time would stand still. The White Tower was built between 1460 and 1494 and still impresses today with the massiveness and suppleness of its architectural lines.

The Beth Israel Synagogue in Brasov is a Jewish place of worship and one of the most beautiful in Europe with a small but active community that maintains with dedication the Jewish tradition.

It was built between 1899 and 1901 in neo-Gothic style with Moorish accents and since 2015 is on the List of Historical Monuments of Brasov.

Council Square – It is situated in the heart of the old medieval town and is bordered by beautiful houses of former merchants. It is known to the Saxons as “Marktplatz”, a superb place for a stroll or just to simply people watch and take in the beauty of the area.

Council House – Built in 1420, the Council House served for centuries as a meeting place for members of the city council.

In the early 17th century, the building’s watchtower became the place from which a trumpeter announced the rush hour and was therefore nicknamed the “Trumpet Tower”.

You should not miss in Brasov the ascent (the hike, approx. 1 hr. 30 min.) to Varful Tampa at 960 metres above sea level.

Right next to the BRASOV sign, there is a wonderful view over the city and the neighbouring region.

It is also possible to take the gondola, but apart from the costs, you will also have to put up with very long waiting times at times (at weekends).

The bastion, defended and maintained by the Linen Weavers’ Guild, was built in two stages between 1421 – 1436 and 1570 – 1573.

In the first phase, the first two levels of the three battle galleries were built. The upper galleries, built between 1570 and 1573, were for small arms, which could be used through narrow circular firing holes all along the way of the galleries. Two watchtowers were built for the guard, who watched over the city both from a military point of view and from the point of view of observing possible fires.

The Black Church (in Romanian Biserica Neagră) is a landmark of Brasov. It is located in the center of the city, directly adjacent to the city square and the old city hall.

The church is a Gothic hall church, which was originally a Catholic church dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary. With the Reformation in Transylvania, which on the part of the Transylvanian-Saxon population was largely determined by the reformer and later Brasov city priest Johannes Honterus, the Catholic patrocinium was abandoned. The Black Church has borne its present name since a town fire in 1689.
