Town twinning Nuremberg - Kronstadt
(08 July 2024)
Town twinning agreement between Nuremberg and Brasov ceremoniously signed
On the occasion of the German-Romanian Cultural Festival last weekend in Nuremberg, the Mayor of the City of Nuremberg, Markus König, and the Mayor of Brasov (Kronstadt), Allen Coliban, ceremoniously signed the certificate of twinning.

All the guests, including the Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder, were delighted with the ‘hearty Romanian food ... with lots of garlic, of course’. Following Romania's participation in the 2024 European Football Championship, Mr Cristian Macedonschi presented the guests of honour (including Nuremberg City Councillor Werner Henning, who has been involved in this city partnership for many years) with gifts in the form of jerseys and fan caps from the Romanian Football Association. Romania has once again shown its positive energy and left a good impression, which is reflected in the atmosphere and the media in many ways.

The village was founded by Transylvanian Saxons at the end of the 12th century and was first mentioned in documents in 1185. The fortified church stands at the north-western end of the village.
In the 12th century, Szekler (a Hungarian-speaking population group in eastern Transylvania) built a small Romanesque hall church here before the German settlers. Synagogue in Brasov / Kronstadt
(23 April 2024)
Until the Second World War, around 800,000 Jews lived in Romania. In the 1950s, a strong emigration to Israel began.
After the political change in 1990, there was another strong emigration. Today, Jewish communities still exist in around 30 places in Romania. Most of the hundreds of synagogues and prayer houses were destroyed during the communist era. There are still two synagogues in Brasov. The one built in 1901 and located in the centre of the city can be visited daily (except on the Sabbath).

St. Catherine's Gate
(03 April 2024)
St. Catherine's Gate dates back to 1556 and was built on the foundations of the earlier wooden gate, the “Gate of the Holy Spirit”, which was erected in 1522. The name of the gate comes from the nunnery which stood there and was named after St. Catherine.
The upper part of the building has four turrets symbolizing the “Ius gladii”, a medieval privilege that gave the rulers of Kronstadt the right to impose the ultimate punishment.
Historically, the “Ius gladii” (“right of the sword”) referred to the legal authority to pronounce the death penalty and have it carried out outside Rome within the framework of capital jurisdiction.

The Brasov Fortress (Kronstadt in German)
(04 October 2023)
The Brasov Fortress (Kronstadt in German) is a fortification built in the 15th century on Straja Hill to repel enemy attacks.
https://discover-brasov.com/en/home-en/ | https://xn--urlaub-in-rumnien-2qb.de/en/
Throughout its history it has been repeatedly attacked and rebuilt and was even an important defense point during the First World War. Originally there was only the fortress tower. The outer fortress was built between 1630 and 1631. The horseshoe-shaped central tower has three floors and has served multiple purposes over the centuries: it served as a warehouse, was a prison for Turkish prisoners in the 18th century and later, during the plague, a special ward was created for the sick.

What you should not miss in Brasov is the ascent (the hike, about 1 hr. 30 min.) to Varful Tampa at 960 meters above sea level.
Right next to the BRASOV sign there is a wonderful view over the city and the surrounding region.
Who wants can of course also go by gondola, but must accept besides the cost also at times very long waiting times (on weekends).
